Invited Commentary Invited Commentary: Positivity in Practice
نویسندگان
چکیده
Positivity, or the experimental treatment assignment assumption, requires that there be both exposed and unexposed participants at every combination of the values of the observed confounders in the population under study. Positivity is essential for inference but is often overlooked in practice by epidemiologists. This issue of the Journal includes 2 articles featuring discussions related to positivity. Here the authors define positivity, distinguish between deterministic and random positivity, and discuss the 2 relevant papers in this issue. In addition, the commentators illustrate positivity in simple 2 3 2 tables, as well as detail some ways in which epidemiologists may examine their data for nonpositivity and deal with violations of positivity in practice.

Invited Commentary Invited Commentary: Some Advantages of the Relative Excess Risk due to Interaction (RERI)—Towards Better Estimators of Additive Interaction
In the accompanying commentary, Rose and van der Laan (Am J Epidemiol. 2014;179(6):663–669) criticize the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) measure, the use of additive interaction, and the weighting approach we developed to assess RERI with case-control data. In this commentary, we note some of the advantages of using additive measures of interaction, such as RERI, in making decis...

The authors apply the analogy of a ‘‘black box’’ from systems theory to epidemiologic problems. They highlight this process using the example of associations between sequential measures of body size and systolic blood pressure. Several other examples of the use of structural equation modeling or path analysis are described. Finally, the authors highlight several requirements for using these met...
متن کاملInvited Commentary Invited Commentary: Topical Threats to Epidemiology
Epidemiologic studies are subject to social and cultural influences, which can influence the way samples are identified or included and information is collected. In this commentary, the author highlights issues related to several factors that may influence current research methods, such as changes in telephone use and new ethical guidelines. Technologic developments that have the potential to p...
متن کاملInvited commentary: screening as a nuisance variable in cancer epidemiology: methodological considerations.
A large literature has developed over the last two decades around methods for evaluating the effects and benefits of screening procedures for cancer. In contrast, the role of screening for cancer as a nuisance variable is one that has as yet received little attention. This is unfortunate, because, as Noel Weiss points out in the lead commentary in this issue of the Journal (1), screening proced...
